Consultant Transplant and General Surgeon
Mr Ben Stutchfield is a consultant surgeon based in Edinburgh. He holds an NHS consultant post at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, and provides private surgical care at Spire Murrayfield and Shawfair Park hospitals.
His clinical practice includes liver transplantation, multiorgan retrieval, hernia repair/abdominal wall reconstruction, gallbladder (gallstone) surgery, and the management of a range of general surgical conditions.
Mr Stutchfield trained in Edinburgh in transplantation, biliary (gallbladder and bile duct) and hernia surgery, and was appointed as a consultant surgeon in 2019. During his training he gained experience at leading surgical centres across the UK, Europe, and the United States, bringing international perspectives that continue to inform his approach to patient care. He remains actively involved in collaboration and innovation to improve surgical outcomes and patient experience.
Keyhole surgery for hernia repair and gallbladder surgery
Mr Ben Stutchfield specialises in laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery for gallbladder removal and hernia repair, using the latest techniques to ensure safe and effective outcomes. He works as part of the specialist hernia team at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and manages gallstone disease as well as other general surgical conditions. He is an active member of the British Hernia Society, participating in the development of hernia surgery. He has a strong commitment to surgical education and, through his NHS role, is actively involved in training other surgeons in these procedures.
Clinical and research interests
Mr Ben Stutchfield’s completed a PhD in regenerative medicine at the University of Edinburgh in 2014 and continues to pursue research focused on improving surgical outcomes. His current work explores advanced techniques in abdominal wall reconstruction and how algorithms and clinicians can work together to enhance decision-making and patient care. He has been actively involved in improving patient pathways within General Surgery and Transplantation.
Mr Stutchfield has published research in The Lancet and other specialist journals, and serves as a reviewer of academic papers. He is committed to applying the latest evidence and innovation in his practice to achieve the best results for his patients.
